The Challenge

THE TOILET CRISIS

600 million people don’t have access to toilets in India and defecate in the open

India faces a toilet crisis of epic proportions. 60% of the Indian population doesn’t have access to a toilet and defecates in the open. Billions of rupees have been spent in constructing toilets but India continues to be last in the World Diarrhoea Rankings. India will not be able to reach the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of “Sanitation for All”.

HOME STATS

30% women experience sexual assault due to lack of sanitation facilities
44% mothers dispose child faeces in the open
100 million school days lost due to lack of toilet
73 million working days lost annually due to water borne diseases
21% of communicable diseases are caused by water

THE CONSEQUENCES

HEALTH
Open defecation is one of the main causes of Diarrhoea, which results in the deaths of more than 750,000 children under age 5 every year globally
In India 1,86,000 children under five, die from diarrhoeal diseases every year
Open defecation is one of the key contributors to malnutrition
SOCIAL
30% of women experience sexual assault due to lack of sanitation facilities
Menstruation, pregnancy and the post-natal period become more problematic if women have nowhere to adequately take care of themselves
Separate toilets at school mean more girls are likely to attend, and more girls are likely to stay on after puberty to complete their education
ECONOMIC
Inadequate sanitation costs India Rs. 2.4T (US$53.8B) i.e. 6.4% of GDP
Each year, children lose 100 million school days due to lack of toilets
These costs are on account of premature deaths, health-care expenses, productive time lost, etc.
Diarrhoea in children below 5 years accounted for more than 47% (US$18B or Rs. 824B) of the total health-related economic impacts.
 ENVIRONMENTAL
Untreated faecal sludge discharged into the environment impacts the usability of ground and surface water, and leads to severe destruction of ecosystems

The Indian Government’s Total Sanitation Campaign is a step in this direction. The Government has announced that it will work towards building toilets with an aim to end open space defecation by 2017. It has welcomed cooperation from social and voluntary organisations to aid in this nationwide drive.

Our Solution

Create “Open Defecation Free” villages by providing individual household toilets to rural households without toilets and ensure long term impact by tracking usage and monitoring behavioural change.

Rural Panvel - Nere

• Nearly 10,000 rural houses have been identified in around 100 villages without toilets

• Our sanitation intervention is being carried out in villages in and around 40kms from Nere Village in Raigad district of Maharashtra

OUR APPROACH
